A hundred thousand welcomes to Durness

DURINE

Durine, Durin; has evolved as the principal township in the village.

Until 1908, a large building stood in the Village Square  housing the Inn , the Durness Hotel. Burned down, the wall remains were finally demolished in the late 1950's and the village green was developed. At the time, this apparently had a devastating effect on the village and is one of the events depicted in a panel and recorded in the Dig Where You Stand  wall hangings.

n 1860, a traveller writes about residing at the inn at Durin where the landlady was a Mrs. Ross. A warm welcome, a cheerful fire and a substantial tea; the sheets were made from the cotton cargo of a ship wrecked during the preceding winter on Faraid Head . Fresh baked oatcakes were served for breakfast and a trout and salmon were caught especially for the evening meal.
