CAPE WRATH RANGE
Cape Wrath range including Garvie Island will be active with various combinations of air bombardment, naval gunfire support and helicopter operations during the following dates: 03 – 07 September 2007, times 0900 to 1200, daily 17 – 28 September 2007, times 07:00 to 2359, daily. When the range is active, red flags/lights will be displayed and sentries positioned on the u70 road. All efforts will be made to keep the u70 road open. However due to the nature of some practices and in the interest of public safety, closure may be necessary. Access advice can be sought from the sentries, who will be in contact with the range officer conducting the firing, or by contacting the free phone number. However, whatever the nature of the practice, under no circumstances is any person to leave the road or proceed anywhere onto the land, particularly the land north of the road within the range area, when the red flags are flying. For further information on the opening and closing of the road and military activity telephone the range on free phone 0800 833300.

Sports Award

Sixteen year old Donna MacKinnon has been awarded the excellence in sports award form Sutherland Sports Council for her dedication to Golf. Donna was presented with the award, a voucher for £250 at a ceremony last Thursday at Dunrobin castle. Donna a pupil at Kinlochbervie High School has just completed her standard grades and is staying on to further her education and has ambitions to study Business law. At Thurso last Saturday Donna won the handicap section of the ladies open.

Concert

Last Thursday evening five exceptionally gifted musicians and singers told the story of North West Sutherland through music, song, poetry and visuals. Ùrachadh composed of James Graham, Gaelic singer who comes from Lochinver, Rhona Sutherland on Violin Guitar from Dalchalm, near Brora, James Ross Piano from Wick, The Strathy-born piping instructor Carol-Anne Mackay played Bagpipes, Accordion Whistles and Catriona MacLeod, Gaelic singer who plays Accordion Whistles from Strathnaver who conceived the idea and has spent two years bringing the concept to fruition. The music was faultless as it brought the film running constantly in the background to life. The audience was taken on a journey through half a millennium of the heritage of Assynt and Mackay Country, A unique and remarkable experience.

Despite heavy rain showers last Saturday an enthusiastic crowd of growers and spectators gathered for the annual Durness Flower and Vegetable Show.

A café serving teas and home- baking, a raffle with prize-winning vegetable prizes, Guess the name of the gnome and an auction of a veggie tray and flower arrangement all helped to raise funds for the village hall. A big thanks to everyone who helped, to Mary and Martin Mackay for donating the trophies and to Cocoa Mountain for donating the children’s prizes.
