Last Wednesday The North West Sutherland Primary School's Eco-Action day took place in Scourie Village Hall

The science company "Edinburgh International Science Festival" provided a show called "Sorted" in the morning. The message of the show was the 3 R's- Reduce, Reuse and recycle.
All primaries from 4 to 6 from Achfary, Durness, Kinlochbervie, Scourie attended. Following this children the took part in five different activities with a recycling theme;  glass painting, rag-rug making, paper fire brick making,  metal sculptures and composting. The results will be exhibited in the 4 schools in turn.

Each of the four schools have recently registered in the Eco-Schools programme, an international programme designed to encourage whole-school action for the environment.
After this recycling day the schools will then begin to apply for a Bronze Award in the scheme.

Village Hall

The first stage of the installation of the new heating system is underway at the Durness Village Hall. The underground pipe work for the ground source heat pump is being laid adjacent to the hall. It is expected that the geothermal unit will be complete in the middle of June. This change from an oil fired boiler system is expected to save on the running costs and play a role in environmental improvements.
