Charity Shop

 

Jill Bruce is selling a wide range of second hand goods from the Village square charity shop. This is the second year Jill has taken on this undertaking and all the proceeds will be distributed to local good causes. There are all kinds of bargains to be found ornaments, brick a brack, cds are a few. Open daily.

 

 

Community Council

 

The community council were informed at their recent meeting that the contract for the works to be carried out on replace of the bridge at Smoo Cave has been awarded to GG Mackenzie of Garve. There is currently no time scale for the start of the work. Negotiations are ongoing regarding the funding and carrying out of necessary work to Keoldale west pier between the Highland Council, Defence Estates and the Northern Lighthouse board. There will be a presentation to the community after the summer regarding the proposed aerospace teaching facility at Durness. John Morrison is to attend the Kinlochbervie and Durness Angling club meetings a representative of Durness Community Council at meetings. The secretary distributed minutes of a recent meeting between legal representations of the Northern Lighthouse board and the community council. Rosland Clifford of Smiths Gore have been appointed to act as property managers for the Northern Lighthouse Board to deal with relevant property issues. They had become aware of the community registration of interest and were exploring ways that a good working relationship could be developed between the community and the Lighthouse Board for mutual benefit. The chair person reported on the recent meeting of the Federation of North coast Community Councils which dealt mainly with the transfer of council housing to housing associations. The new Durness leaflet is now available and will be shortly followed by the business leaflet. People can obtain supplies through a community councilor. Work is ready to start on the installation of The video link to eh Tourist Information center from Faraid Head. The first of the materials will be arriving this week and when cable laying and concrete plinths are in place the technical equipment will be installed. A brief report regarding the Geopark business group was given summarizing that the areas of concentration will be raising the Geopark profile amongst business with encouragement to link websites and have a Geopark presence, identify journalists to publish articles on the Geopark and develop the Geopark website. A presence was made at the Sutherland partnership tourism Forum and a brief report was given.

The community Council arranged to visit Cape Wrath to discuss the signage and view the new visitor interpretation area and report to the Highland Council on the results. The next meeting of the community council is on the first Monday of September.

 

 

Sports Award

 

Donna Mackinnon was won the Sutherland Sports Council junior Sports award and received her award at Dunrobin Castle on Wednesday 5 July. Donna has been making marvellous achievements in golf and this is a well learned recognition. Donna is a pupil in fourth year at Kinlochbervie High school
